Master Chef – pushing obesity problem?

Once again, masterchef has created another legend. Junior masterchef is definitely a great success. My friends and myself have been huge masterchef fans since the first session. There have been many cooking competitions that I watched but only Masterchef that really catches my attention. Congratulation once again to the success of Junior Master Chef and also the winner, Isabella. I love these two non-identical twins, great talent and good effort.

However, a tiny voice in my mind tells me that Masterchef is not all that good influence. It is amazing to see children cooking VEGETABLES as most kids are very picky when it comes to greens.. On the other hand, it can be disturbing to see how much butter was added in a sauce pan to create a fantastic tasting dish. This issue starts to annoy my little peace of mind when I saw Julie, the first Australia masterchef has put on WEIGHT. Her last cooking in masterchef kitchen was scary..Butter butter and butter.. I am worried about her cholesterol level and of course BMI.

Masterchef has influenced many people. Myself is an example. Sometimes after watching this show, I can’t help but snack a little. I make more sweets and desserts during my free time. The temptation is so great..Yum..but..Bad for my weight, health and tooth.

It is a great show to watch, to learn about the art of cooking and food culture. However, is it a little too much butter, or sugar in that little plate of thing? If only masterchef and work together with Australia’s biggest loser, to create food that is healthy, low in calories and taste fabulous, that would be perfect!

“That is matt!”

One of the most effective way to reduce the incidents of lifestyle diseases in a population is to educate them how to eat properly. Balanced diet with minimal seasoning possible, right portion, little sweets. Sometimes, I think that masterchef is doing the other way around…

PS: I will still watch it anyway =)

No to Mega Tower!

This is not a political talk. I write this because I love Malaysia. not the gov.

A lot of people went against the idea of building KLCC..Well, I was too young that time to have much opinion about it. Now the mega tower. I am not sure how effective it will be to promote our country or to help with our economy. Indeed, the presence of KLCC in our country has helped to spread the name of “Malaysia”. Currently, I am studying in a foreign land. Sometimes I came across with people who have not heard of Malaysia before, I will either have to say

“Oh it is a country above singapore.”

Then they will reply “oh, is it the place with the twin buildings”

Well,in my opinion,  the competition to build the highest building is out of fashion. Years ago, countries compete with each other to build the highest building. I went to Taiwan 101 Building, nothing special besides TALL. People will only remember that is a tall building, that’s it.

Apart from the 5 billions ringgit that is to be spent on BUILDING IT. How about the maintenance? Utility bills? Is it cost effective to throw 5 billions ringgit building something that one day another country will build something even taller.. How tall you want it to be?

It is a common sense to know that it is more worth while to spend that enormous amount of money in something else.

Eg. Producing non-reckless bus drivers, policemen that assault innocent people with valid reasons, fight against criminals.

Mr Najib said that such projects exemplify the spirit of ‘Malaysia Boleh’ or ‘Malaysia Can!’, a national campaign conceived by former premier Mahathir Mohamad, a huge advocate of mega projects.

All Malaysians know that Malaysia Boleh! ( Buat apa pun boleh-mah). We don’t need a tall building to tell the world that we are the best or we are good.  We need clean streets, safe environment, clean air, jobs…

Don’t proof to the world that ” we have 1st class facilities with 3rd class mentality!”

Who can we trust now?

STudying in oversea, facebook is one of the media to keep myself updated with Malaysia News. As expected, most of the news posted on facebook by Malaysian friends are often negative press, either ridiculous acts, saddening news or something that triggers anger of Malaysians. Again, today I came across with another news, that is far far worse than the usual M+C+I issue – our “highly respected” policemen.

The latest news : INNOCENT MALAY LADY GOT SHOT BY MALAYSIAN POLICEMEN.

There are always spoiled eggs in a basket. However, immediate action must be taken by respective party to solve the problem, to re-build the people’s confidence towards the police force (not that we have much confidence on them anyway). Having such incident happening in Malaysia is a shame, but having authorities that fail to act quickly on this is a BIGGER SHAME. I was searching for news article regarding the issue above and I found none. (as always)

WHo can we trust now? Crime rate in Malaysia has increased drastically over the years. And now SOME policemen are acting against the law with little difference from the criminals.  Why is this happening?

Some people commented, ” Because Malaysia Boleh!”

Malaysia goverment should really put more effort in improving the quality of our policemen than wasting their time fighting against the sensitive issues or trying to build some SUPER HIGH BUILDING. When will we have a good leader?

Another news about the policemen

Policemen jailed six months for assaulting Indonesian referee

Sad sad sad………

Why Drivers Don’t Learn

AGAIN! AGAIN! AGAIN! Another bus accident in Malaysia causing deads and injuries.

Public demands explanation over senseless deaths

Blame game all over again

Crash anguish

I am very sad…And more to it..I AM ANGRY!!! I AM ANGRY AND TIRED OF READING SUCH NEWS AGAIN!!!!! I feel the pain for the deaths’ family

How many bus accidents had occurred for the past few years..One after another.. LOOK AT THIS! LOOK AT THESE VIDEO!

The ministers/officers say:

“Tour and express bus operators have to install a device which records the bus speed if drivers exceed 90kph, a requirement that came into force in 2001.”

(yeah, requirement is one thing, enforcement is another, shame on this)

“He urged the authorities to re-evaluate the speed limit for heavy vehicles and suggested a higher fine or even revocation of licences”

Yes, It may be the speed limit, it may be the vehicle itself, but most important is THE MINDSET OF THE DRIVERS. I wouldn’t say it is always the drivers’ fault but I strongly believe that most accidents are avoidable. Without strict enforcements, the right attitude from drivers, safety measures is not enough to reduce accident rates.

TO some drivers rules are to be broken. How many of them actually care about speed limit. We all know that the speed limit for buses and lorries is 90km/hour. But it is a norm to see heavy vehicles overtake cars that are driving at 120km/hour. How saddening…why are we letting this happen?

Some drivers are just selfish people, not that they put their own lives at risk but also the public. Are these people suitable to operate a public transport? Drivers learn drivers…Don’t let the history repeats itself!!

When will this improve? WHat should we do to tell the bus drivers/bus companies that we are very-super-extremely concern about this?

Boycott long trip buses? Incentives for the bus drivers? More fine? Take away their license?

How can we put this message into the drivers’ mind:  ” You are carrying many lives in your vehicles, be careful!

I think it is time that some special buses/heavy vehicles that can’t run more than 90km/hour is allowed on the road. If we can’t control the drivers, maybe we should control their vehicles

active reading

I just finished reading “the book thief” and it has inspired me to write this:

Words are really powerful. If used appropriately it can be a medicine, a form of entertainment or a tool to achieve mutual understanding.Otherwise, it can be a powerful weapon as it can manipulate our minds. if we flip the pages of history, some dictators or emperors have used words, books to control the people’s mind.

“The book thief” , written by Markus Zusak, is set inNazi  Germany during World War II. In the book it describes how Hilter and Nazi Party restrict the source of literatures that the people could assess to. They brainwashed the public with ”Their preferred book” and burned the rest. Although my knowledge on history of other countries is lacking,” the book thief” reminds me of The ancient China Emperor, Qin Shi Huang who outlaw and burned many books to ensure stability of a country. Also, I have heard that the Japanese army have used words to brainwash their prisoners during World War II.All these clearly show the power of words and that explains why some politicians publish their books.

I have taken Australian English subject during my pre-U. Different from the typical Malaysia education system where I was taught to SWALLOW the knowledge and VOMIT them out during exam( = PASSIVE READING), the Australia education system encouraged me to question, analyse, criticise, argue then accept and apply. They strongly encourage ACTIVE READING. During my Australian English course, I was given articles, movies and even documentaries to analyse, to think what type of technique the author/director has used to convey a message. How they manipulate the words and pictures to convince us. Although I have not excel in the subject, I have learnt the core message of the subject, think before you accept.

In this modern era, information is everywhere. Apart from the usual printed material, our brains are flooded with information from internet and electronic materials. In such situation, active reading plays an important role so that we don’t get swayed away by the wrong information, wrong influences.

There is an old Chinese saying “尽信书不如无书 – it is better off not to read if you were to believe the book entirely”.

This doesn’t only apply to essays and articles, but also reports and studies. Hahaha..I am getting more sceptical after studying pharmacy course.

We need to learn from children – Don’t stop questioning, keep asking why. =)

It is the “People”, not the race

I was happily cooking some porridge for breakfast when these thoughts race into my head. It was so intense that I know I need to write this down. I was having a discussion with some friends of mine regarding the COMMON and the-seem-like-NEVER-ending issue of Malaysia – M+C+I. By the way, I am a Malaysian(origin- Chinese).

The discussion started with the HOT TOPIC about a headmistress commented about asking Chinese students (citizens of Malaysia) to go back to China. It happens I believe, sometimes. But what makes this incident disappointing is the fact that the person who commented that is leader of educators, given the responsibility to shape the mind of our coming generation. Apparently no strict action was being taken against the headmistress(the educated-but-village-minded-commonsenseless-individual). I personally would say that she has touched on the “SENSITIVE ISSUE”. Hmm..maybe some INTERNAL STRICT ACTION should be taken as her comments treaten the security of our country. Hahahaha…OK this case done.

Then we came to the USUAL TOPIC bout M+C+I. Some people blames the race as a whole (giving them funny names), most people blames the “management executives”,some people blame the history- The British policies that pull us apart. I agree that the blame should be placed on THE MANAGERS and EXECUTIVES, but I strongly against the idea that it is THE RACE’s fault. British policies…HMM..maybe it plays a role but we have gained independence for more than half a century. If it is the influence from the British policies, then I guess we CHOSE TO BE INFLUENCED… Now we are educated, we should know more to differentiate it is the ISSUE, THAT PEOPLE, not any race’s fault.

With the advance of transportation available, “globalisation” is not an uncommon word. It is easy to travel from one country to another. What is the current trend? It is common to see other races/tribes in many countries. Why see people as races and origins, why not just see them as human beings which we all are.

One group’s fault doesn’t give us the right to put the blame on the entire population. That is why I dislike Mr Wee. Some people see him as a hero, a daring person to express his dissatisfaction. He truly MIS-used his freedom of speech, but when you truly think about his comments. Is it constructive? Is it objective or subjective? Is he trying to solve the problem or create more problems? I guess you know the answer now.

It is true that people of my race are being placed in a difficult position. We need to work harder. However, we can’t deny the fact that this whole situation makes us stronger. Natural selection – the fittest survive. M race has their own problems in our country. True that they might get things easier, but the M people who have gained what they have today through their own capabilities are not being recognised. Some of the M students are very smart and intelligent, but how many poeple will praise them when they get scholarships. (Very often people relate scholarship to the M skin colour. Maybe true, but not always.) They too are the victims of the selfishness of some people…

My main point here is don’t blame on any of the victims, give it M,C or I. Look the the bigger picture, put our energy to solve the issue, not the race. Things don’t get better by giving them funny names…

Alright-y..Time for my porridge..YumYum

Tiger Airway Australia Pissed me off!

If you google “Tiger Airways Contact” on the net, they will direct you to the tiger airway official website.

When you click on the link http://www.tigerairways.com/sg/en/contact_us.php, they ask you to contact them through call centre or fax. Email detail is not provided because …..

“Why no email address? When we previously provided an email address for customers to write to, we received many duplicate/repeat emails on the same matter, which delay the response process for all customers” as per Tiger Airway website

I need to upsize my luggage ( I didn’t buy check in luggage when I book online) to my existing booking. Based on  my understanding (by reading the Tiger Airway website), I will have to call the local call centre to make changes. So, I called the number +61 3 9335 3033 . “Doo-doo-doo-doo” – The call can’t get through…Again “doo-doo-doo-doo”. I have been calling the number for hours still I can’t get through.

As mentioned above, no email address. They provide fax number, I have no fax machine here. Call centre number can’t get through at all. I can’t upsize luggage online. Fantastic! So how should I contact them? Smart..Out of desperation, I called Tiger Airway Singapore just for the luggage. It is finally settled.

WHat is the point of providing a call centre number if customers can’t get through. I am writing this in my blog because I have no other way to provide such feedback to TigerAirway Australia. I can’t send an email to them, I can’t get them through phone, I have no fax,I don’t want to waste extra credits to call oversea branch to complain bout Australia branch, I am too lazy to post a formal letter to melbourne office. Therefore, I decide to write this.

I am really hoping that some staffs in Tiger Airway will happen to read this and look into this matter. I believe I am not the only customer who face this problem.
