Recently I start going to an oldfolks home on Sunday to feed the less-abled elderly. Yesterday, I went there again…As usual after feeding, I spoke to some elderly, just to spend some time and to accompany them. Yesterday I fed two old folks. One lady insisted on holding another volunteer’s hand while eating. Another man, who looked healthier, is unable to eat himself. He refused to eat much, he didn’t want to finish 1/4 of the food. The senior volunteer encouraged him, advised him, only then he ate slightly more. Is he trying to waste his body away?Is the food not appealing? He hate to be fed like a child? I don’t know..Tons of questions appear in my mind, but I chose to keep them to myself
The aunties and uncles were very happy to see visitors around. Some of them talks non stop while others refuse to talk much. I came to this lady, who is suffering from anxiety disorder. She gets nervous over very small things, thinking that she is a burden to everyone, lonely and unhappy… She appreciated our visit and gave us some fruits. Although it does not cost much, it represent gratitudes.
Then I met a former nurse who is suffering from dementia. Very often she bumped into people’s room, thinking that the room is hers..
Before I left, I asked the volunteer,’ how often the children visit this auntie?’ He replied ‘ Once a week, (paused) for 5 minutes’. I was shocked. I actually spent much more time with the old folks than their children ..How saddening.
I thought of my parents..I missed them. I want to massage them like how I massage the old folks.. The senior volunteer asked me, ‘ Future is more important or opportunity to accompany your parents?’ I can’t answer…
I just want to call my parents..
